Will my bull always freeze viable semen?
Bulls vary widely in semen production and semen quality. The greatest problem encountered in semen collection and processing is the low-fertility bull. Many spermatogenesis problems are caused or intensified by environmental and management factors. Bulls brought to Rocky Mountain Sire Services for collection should be in the best possible physical condition to increase the chances of collecting freezable semen. Bulls should be raised and maintained on an adequate ration promoting healthy growth and development, as the reproductive functions of the animal are the first to suffer from inadequate nutrition. Conversely, bulls that have been pushed for growth and extra condition often suffer semen quality problems from excess energy rations. As an example, show bulls have notoriously poor semen quality due to the rigors of traveling on the show circuit and the usual excess finish. It may take some bulls a long convalescence before any, if any, improvement in semen quality is made.
How many straws will my bull produce?
The number of straws produced varies from bull to bull and is determined by the concentration of the ejaculate(s).
How do you know if my bull’s frozen semen is viable enough for breeding purposes?
Every ejaculation that is frozen is evaluated multiple times, before and after freezing, by our highly trained team members in the lab to ensure optimal semen viability and high conception rates. Sperm cells are again checked for morphology and motility, and any semen not passing our strict quality control guidelines is then discarded.
